How we crafted the ultimate Lakes, Fiords and Mountains cycling tour

A women-only group about to start on their cycle tour

How do you choose the perfect cycling tour?

What makes a trip really appeal to you?

Manapouri is best enjoyed with friends

Is it the scenery, the variety, or the challenges that catch your eye? Or maybe you're ticking off a bucket list? What tips the scale: a personal recommendation, travel descriptions, photos, or specific memories that resonate with you? There's no one-size-fits-all answer; it can be one thing one time and something else another.

When we plan our trips, we naturally ponder similar questions.

In crafting the Lakes, Fiords, and Mountain Cycle Tour, every element came into play: ensuring a tour that's not overcrowded, packing in as much variety as possible, and setting aside a day where each participant can pursue their interests.

Plus, we weave in personal favourites like Manapouri and the Mavora Lakes. I've known both spots since my first season guiding in New Zealand back in the summer of '95. It was love at first sight, and it still is. Their unique landscapes keep drawing me back. It's fantastic that both places are perfect for cycling tours too.

The Lake2Lake Cycle Trail from Te Anau to Manapouri stands out—plus including the Mavora Lakes as a slight detour on the most scenic stretch of the Around the Mountain Trail through the Von Valley was crucial. While many are drawn to the fame of the Lake Dunstan Trail, these two cycling days already make this tour absolutely worthwhile for me. The rest is just the icing on the cake 😉.
